Quality Control Assays of Polyurethane Raw Materials Using Benchtop Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (2025)

Part 1/4 – Polyols

This application note is the first of four parts summarizing the analysis of raw materials used in polyurethane production. This part focused on polyols, which are one of the two major components used to create polyurethanes. In this work, the identities, purities, hydroxyl values, number-average molecular weights, and number of repeating units of five polyols are confirmed via 1H NMR spectroscopy

Part 2/4 – Catalysts

This application note is the second of four parts summarizing the analysis of raw materials used in polyurethane production. This part focused on catalysts, which are one of the main components used to create polyurethanes. In this work, the purities and compositions of six catalysts were confirmed via 1H NMR spectroscopy.spectroscopy

Part 3/4 – Diisocyanates, Extenders and Crosslinkers

This application note is the third of four parts summarizing the analysis of raw materials used in polyurethane production. This part focused on diisocyanates, as well as extenders and crosslinkers, which are two major components used to create polyurethanes. In this work, the identities and purities of various products were confirmed via 1H NMR spectroscopy.

Part 4/4: UV Stabilizers, Antioxidants, Flame Retardants

This application note is the fourth of four parts summarizing the analysis of raw materials used in polyurethane production. This part focused on UV stabilizers, antioxidants, and flame retardants, which are important components used to create polyurethanes. In this work, the identities and purities of various products were confirmed via 1H, 13C{1H}, and 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy.
