USP-NF: Parabens Assays

Paraben Assays: An Efficient and Greener Alternative to HPLC (2023)

Parabens are among the most widely used preservatives in a variety of products, ranging from food to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. This class of molecules is based on p-hydroxybenzoic acid, with substitutions of the carboxylic acid fragment by ester groups of varying chain lengths. In this application note, we demonstrate equivalency to the three current USP-NF monograph assay methods for methyl-, ethyl-, and propylparaben, which require the use of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This is done using benchtop quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance (qNMR) spectroscopy.
